In July, ambitious young people from Perth Metro, Kalgoorlie, and Newman came together for their first Kokoda training camp, marking a significant milestone in the Kokoda Leadership and Development Program.
This was the first opportunity for young participants from across the state to come together for training, preparation, and connection.
To set a positive and grounded tone for the weekend the camp began with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by Uncle Walter, Traditional Owner of Nyoongar Boodjar, which includes the Whadjuk lands where Perth City stands.
Day two challenged participants with a demanding fitness challenge, giving them a taste of the physical and mental endurance needed for the journey ahead. Trekkers also learnt the value of teamwork as they motivated one another throughout the day long hike.
As the camp concluded, young people shared their personal motivations for joining the trek. This revealed powerful stories of inspiration with one young person from Kalgoorlie sharing that...., “I think that the Kokoda program is life changing. I’m just grateful because I wouldn’t have had this opportunity if it wasn’t for the Kokoda program.”
Another young person from Perth said, “the training was really hard, but it feels good, it feels good to be able to do it cos you get to the end of it, and you’re like, ‘wow I did that!’."
By Sunday afternoon, participants had successfully conquered a 17 kilometer hike, overcame mental barriers, and forged new friendships.
The weekend proved to be transformative, highlighting the young participants' dedication and setting an exciting precedent for the journey that lies ahead.
